A brief summary of my professional background
If I were to mix my past and present careers, hobbies and interests together in no particular order, the list would look something like this. Social commentator, UK breakdancing champion, Political analyst, Nightclub DJ, Author, Radio presenter, Business Consultant, Youth Worker, Entrepreneur, Music Producer and Band member. Schizophrenic or incredibly privileged? I will leave that up to you....
Entrepreneur: As a serial entrepreneur my portfolio of projects are diverse. With my ‘concept to delivery approach’ I have nurtured a diverse array of projects from individuals, small start-ups to raising 1.3 million from investors for major development works, of which, I went on to successfully project manage the business development and national PR, marketing campaigns.
As a consultant I regularly met leaders that differed in their opinion of business practice. I witnessed many battles for dominance in the boardroom and held the highest regard for those that refused to comprise their character. It was the courage of their conviction that influenced me most when starting my own business ventures. As a self-confessed serial entrepreneur, I understand the emotional turmoil faced when the success of a company could compromise integrity. These start-up companies have succeeded some of the time, failed most of the time, but helped developed a strength of character every time.
After visiting more than 5000 schools across the UK as youth worker, the frustration of young people were apparent. My interaction and understanding of young adults formed as i DJ'd in the nightclubs of Europe. This led to presenting shows for radio on stations such as Kiss and Radio 1. My background in music production generated a large portfolio including 4 top 10 hits and various productions for TV and radio. The entrepreneurial DNA surfaced and I opened a super-nightclub, Promoted club nights and authored a book. My experiences drive my desires, and they are directed by 4 basic principles:
My passionate belief, is that young people and adults of no, or limited academic ability, from areas of deprivation, culture, social backgrounds have untapped potential, transferable skills and creative ability - talent! Yet, not only do they not recognise it, feel isolated due to history, environment, or know how to apply it - we don’t either, we try, but in most cases fail miserably. If it can be applied, encouraged and mentored - in their language and cultural context to business. I believe that a generation of socially-inclusive entrepreneurs could be raised and benefit the communities where they live. They will adapt – Will we?
