Part 2 - Drug dealers - A model of entrepreneurial excellence?

If we acknowledge the obvious devestation caused to individuals and communities by the black economy and drug trade, try to put it  aside for one moment, and refocus on the untapped talent and skillsets of those who drive it. We may be able to learn from them.

A new opportunity for all

Driven by fear, peer pressure and a distrust of authority figures the jostling for position resulted in a new and more inclusive alternative to employment. This one didn’t care about academic results, this opportunity confirmed that success doesn’t depend on an institution that houses glorified babysitters tasked with keeping order, financially backed by the state and masquerading as education. This system gave up, adhered to the rules and targets and young people felt robotic and uninspired. The lack of creative outlets resulted in a new form of self preservation and at least it was inclusive! The burden to succeed within a system that felt one-sided, systemically against them and impossible to penetrate led the revolution today and young people chose to listen to their own advice. This new form of counselling is an important part of the societal fabric.

The new business opportunities created by these enterprising young people reward creativity by encouraging and believing in each other– no strings attached! Whatever role these young people decide to apply for, the promise is the same. This investment will go a long way to benefit those nearest and dearest relationships, family members and friends. The promise not only guarantees that they will feel good, it goes a step further by inferring their circle of friends would increase exponentially, more friends could mean more attention, people would respect your opinion, care about your well-being, they would listen to your creative thoughts and look up to you. This would give the young person a genuine sense of belonging; they feel responsible, special and hope-full for the future. I can hear them now...

“C’mon – all are welcome! You will be a celebrity, popular beyond your wildest imagination, constantly sought after by important officials”
In order to sweeten the deal, all these promises, training and life-skills are taught on the job, and in an environment of their choice. Plus, it’s TOTALLY FREE!

Earn as you learn

Young people who are offered the right working conditions with achievable goals, encouragement and somebody to believe in them will flourish in this revolution. If given the chance to experience a freedom to create a new life of stability, cash, respect and friendship the offer is the ONLY one worth considering. With the right social conditions, they will generate new business with an almost evangelical fervour– this workforce is dedicated to the success of business and they will defend it to the death! It doesn’t matter if the rules are different than established business practice; they were never given a chance to take part anyway.

In this new business model each transaction could happen as they see fit, they choose the location to work and circumstance means they are their own boss and work to a schedule that they choose. They understand that a code of conduct exists, yet creativity and poetic license is actively encouraged, Independent thinking is nurtured by learning to read the moment, judge the business mood and invent new rules as and when required. Now that takes a creative mind!

Rapid career progression - from trainee to business leader

It must be an emotional roller coaster for these young people to apply when they make the transition from old stereotype to the new opportunity. We should consider the emotional baggage that comes from years of being shunned. They have had to endure a populist view that stigmatised them based on their geographical area. Disregarded by society as lazy, good-for-nothings and classed as a drain on the national coffers, this take-take-take label must form part their opinions, yet they now have the chance to take an active part in their locality, spearhead community transformation and become super-community champions and business leaders overnight.

Their desire to succeed means they are hungry to intimately understand the business process! With limited resources they need to create a base in order to employ good personnel, it is this that drives creative solutions. Invention is the mother of necessity so they create spectacular incentives such as 2-for-1 deals and buy now - pay later plans tailored to individual needs. They don’t have to, but they empathise with the situation, they have been in the same state of flux and understand the financial difficulties faced by their community.

They do all this in the knowledge that all sales need to be balanced by their operating costs, distribution expense, and purchase of new stock, profit margins and market fluctuations. They know that demand for their services can influence quality and increase the costs for the consumer, yet they are reassured and able to make certain concessions if the supply chain is working to full capacity. If demand is high and the market price good, it’s worth the risk. After all, business is based on calculated risk, knowing your market, creating a loyal customer base and delivering a product that appeals to all types of budgets
